In Hitman: Contracts, the game focuses on the exploits of an Agent 47, as he is sent to several places to assassinate targets. A wide variety of weapons can be used, from kitchen knives to belt machine guns. While stealth and subterfuge are encouraged, the game allows the player to take a more violent approach and shoot at their mission objectives. As players progress through the game, they can collect the various weaponry found in the levels, allowing them to be used in future missions. For example, when the player is near a door, the context-sensitive button will allow the player to perform relevant actions for the door, such as looking through the keyhole, opening the lock or, if allowed, simply opening it.

When the player is near an unconscious or dead NPC, the same button will allow the possibility of acquiring the person's attire or dragging the body to an area where the guards can not find it. Along with the context-sensitive button, the "Suspicion Meter" also returns; This meter informs players how close they are to blowing their respective cover. Actions such as excessive running inside, brandishing weapons openly, residing in restricted areas or hiding can arouse suspicion. Proximity also often elevates the meter.
