Rise of the Tomb Raider is a third-person action adventure game where players control Lara Croft, who seeks to explore the legendary city of Kitezh. Combat is the main game mechanism. Lara has a wide variety of weapons at her disposal, some of which have an alternate fire mode. Players can also take advantage of sneaking to advance through parts of the game, using bows and arrows to take out enemies, diverting attention to get the enemy's attention away from Lara, or hiding in the jungle to escape from enemies. Lara can use the environment to fight enemies, launch explosive barrels, shoot down structures wrapped in ropes with rope arrows, or ambush enemy enemies from heights. He can also use his combat knives and a combat knife to participate in melee combat with enemies. Achievement of objectives, secondary content and elimination of enemies give XP players (XP). When players collect enough XP, they reach a higher level and get a skill point, which can be spent on the game's three skill trees: cheerleader, hunter and survivor. The hiker improves Lara's efficiency with weapons, giving her abilities such as retrieving stocks of corpses and their stability. Aim, while improving its ability to resist the attack and unleash new combat skills, such as killing Dodge. Hunter gives him an advantage when it comes to environments and animals. The survivor covers a wide range of skills such as creating incendiary bombs and setting explosive traps. Lara learns new languages, which allows her to discover monuments (like coins) that can be exchanged for new equipment.
The game has semi-open pivots to explore. In the hubs there are items that Lara collects, including crafting materials and survival hiding places. These collectibles and items such as monuments and documents can be revealed to players who use Survival Instinct, a view mode that highlights important items. By collecting items, players can craft items using the game's draft menu; Lara can make poisoned ammunition and arrows (using mushrooms), molotov cocktails and pomegranates from cans and bottles. The open areas are filled with wild animals, which can be captured to gather more resources. Players can discover and explore difficult tombs for new skills and costumes. Lara's clothes, which affect her combat performance, can be changed in base camps. The camps allow Lara to change their weapon campaigns, by choosing one of the types of weapons she will use, for example by choosing a type of bow (Makeshift Longbow or Ancient Horn Bow) or a handgun (semi-automatic pistol or heavy pistol), which are fast travel points that allow players to explore a desired Advance area. The game contains side quests and challenges that can provide players with new equipment, and players move through complex environments to progress. Lara can use her pickles to climb cliff-like surfaces and rope arrows to create zip lines to reach hard-to-reach areas, and she can climb trees and swim. The puzzles, based on the physics of the game, are often linked; players have to solve the connection puzzles to solve a bigger problem.
Unlike the restart of Tomb Raider 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider lacks multiplayer mode. It presents Expeditions, which allow players to restart the game with new restrictions and requirements. The game has four modes: Chapter Replay, Chapter Replay Elite, Score Attack and Remnant Resistance. The chapter displayed on the chapter and the playable chapter text can allow players to replay any level, while the elite allows them to transfer skills and weapons already acquired to the level. Score Attack introduces chains of combos into play. Residues of resistance allow players to create custom scenarios, which can be shared with other players. By completing expeditions, players earn credits which can then be used to purchase digital trading cards to modify gameplay.
